Water for the animals

Through the years, Phil has built up a system of moveable heavy-duty hoses that reach almost entirely to the edge of our 40 acres of pasture. But there are a handful of spots on the land that the hoses do not reach. In those cases, Phil loads up a giant barrel of water and drives it out to them.

Look close, it’s another cinemagraph!

Pigs are comin' to Sweetlove Farm!

I’m very excited to announce that Phil is getting 2 piglets in the next couple weeks! Unfortunately, it won’t be for selling at the Farmer’s Market, but we’re still very excited to begin a new adventure in meat for our freezer. This photo is the pork loin we had for Easter dinner. While it was delicious, we are convinced that it would have been even better had we raised it ourselves! We can’t wait! Stay tuned - we’ll keep you abreast of how it goes with the new pigs.

Granny Ham Sandwiches

My mom has made these ham sandwiches since I can remember. She got the original recipe from a woman named Dorothy Butcher from Salina in a recipe book that a group of ladies put together one year for a fundraiser. I don’t even know if my mom even has the original recipe, as we usually just wing it we’ve made it so often. And I also don’t know if they even have a name, so we’ve dubbed them “Granny” sandwiches (Granny being my mom). Here’s my attempt at writing down the recipe for you. I ADORE these sandwiches! Hope you like ‘em too!

Remember those strawberry blooms from a couple weeks ago?

When Burke was first learning to talk, whenever he’d have nightmares or couldn’t sleep for whatever reason, Phil would play a game with him called “Let’s talk about things we like.” They would go back and forth naming various things from “Mama” to “Pizza” and everything in between. But always (always!) Burke would start out staying “Strawberries from the garden” - no matter what. So now, it’s a family tradition that whenever someone says “Hey, let’s talk about things we like” the other person always responds “I like strawberries from the garden.”

Well, guess what? Today, we picked the first ten strawberries, and boy, do we “like strawberries from the garden!!!”

Treely the frog

Ever since Burke was a tiny guy, anytime we’d find a “tree frog” (I honestly don’t know if this is the type of frog this is - we just assume they are tree frogs), we call them by the proper name Treely (pronounced tree-lee). This is because one of Burke’s all time best friends, Henry, dubbed a tree frog this one day long ago when he and Burke were playing around our yard. The name stuck. So, last night we found “Treely” again and had some fun with him (poor Treely, got man-handled probably a little too much!).
