Phil is almost finished with a new coop design for the layers. He had such trouble with predators this year (started with 150 layers and ended with 50) that he’s decided to build a different kind of coop that will keep the layers inside all the time while he moves the coop once or twice daily to fresh ground. Sort of a hybrid of his current “rolling pen” and the tractor pen he uses for the broilers. The plan will be to build about 5 of these to accommodate about 30-40 birds per pen. He has yet to place the plastic sheathing over the top so that it will be ready for the winter. Stay tuned for pictures of the final product complete with baby chicks inside!
